“Like a Tinderbox! The Berlin Crisis and the Construction of the Wall“

Tour by the curator

To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall, the Allied Museum in Berlin presents a special exhibition entitled, "Like a Tinderbox! The Berlin Crisis and the Building of the Wall." The exhibition - the only one of its kind in Germany - illuminates the international dimension of events that took place during this explosive period in contemporary history.

The topics range from Khrushchev's ultimatum to the international conferences on the Berlin Crisis, from the building of the Berlin Wall to the tank face-off at Checkpoint Charlie and the nuclear arms race of the Cold War. The exhibition presents previously unknown military plans for worst-case scenarios, along with Soviet propaganda posters and numerous photographs. The original facade of the Checkpoint Charlie guardhouse, a reconstruction of a conference room, and two authentic warheads provide visitors with an immersive experience. "Frozen moments" present the stories of individuals from this time.

Admission is free. No reservation needed
The tour will be conducted in German
