Americans in Southwest Berlin
The last American soldiers left Berlin in 1994. For some five decades, they left their mark on the city and the life of its people. Their influence was particularly great in southwest Berlin, where their traces are still visible today. The Allied Museum itself is located at the heart of the former American Sector. The present-day exhibition buildings were part of the US infrastructure, and points of reference for the community: the Outpost Theater showed the latest movies for soldiers and their families and the Nicholson Memorial Library was the central garrison library for the US armed forces in Berlin.
What remains of the American occupying power today? What stories do the sites built, used, or administered by the US armed forces between 1945 and 1994 have to tell?
The Allied Museum embarked on a journey of discovery in southwest Berlin and returned with some new offerings for visitors.
